Espantos #70

I heard it very casually from a friend:

"we have a holiday party at work next Friday in a very posh place"

Knowing my friend's company, I guessed the place should be very trendy and expensive. To double check I went to my favorite online dictionary - google - and typed "define:posh". I was right:

Meaning fashionable and expensive in modern language...

but here's the surprising factor

... but has its origins from the docks of Boston. The trunks of the wealthy used to travel from Europe to America would carry the label "POSH", short for "portside out, starboard home"


... had to come from the rich & elegant Bostonian upper class :-)
