Primavera #68

Every year, spring unfolds in a weekly progress. First the magnolias (white/pale pink, pink, and yellow), then the cherry blossoms (of various kinds), now the dogwoods. And flowery the feast will go on in the next few weeks!

Twenty years and 257 days after the massacre of Srebrenica, Karadzic was sentenced today to 40 years in prison for genocide and crimes against humanity in the Balkan War of the 1990s that followed the dismantling of Yugoslavia after the fall of the Soviet Regime. Though late Justice was done, but the hideous crimes leave a hollow feeling that prevents any kind of joy, vengeance, or accomplishment.

Fica a frase:

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) shows the war in Afghanistan from the perspective of the war correspondent who endures the dangerous local environment while fighting for the attention of news editors in New York. Though the tone is generally light, it's a war movie whose stories are not far from reality in Kabul, Kandahar, or Kunduz. Based on the memoir of an American international journalist on her experiences reporting in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Display of superior knowledge is as great a vulgarity as display of superior wealth — greater, indeed, inasmuch as knowledge should tend more definitely than wealth towards discretion and good manners.

The Lady in the Van (2016) reminds us that behind every homeless person there is a story, a life of surprising achievements and heavy disappointments, a human being with feelings and thoughts and hopes that justify their current situation... just like everyone else. Dame Maggie Smith shows the wide versatility of her acting skills and despite the obvious differences of class, appearance, and self consciousness, there are common traits with the Dowager Countess of Grantham.

Race (2016) tells the story of Jesse Owens in the 1936 Berlin Olympics hosted by Hitler to showcase Nazi Germany to the world. In the end the games showed Owens's speed. Much like Jackie Robinson, Owens triumphed in spite of insult and abuse so prevalent in American society at the time and for decades to come. The double meaning of the title makes the movie about the speed of a remarkable athlete, but also his remarkable (almost superhuman) endurance of racial tension.

Out there there ain't no black or white, there's only fast and slow

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Waiting for the dowager who has a strange relationship with being wrong...

Robert: you'll both admit it when you realize you were wrong
Dowager: oh, that is an easy caveat to accept because I'm never wrong

Isobel: how you hate to be wrong!?
Dowager: I wouldn't know, I am not familiar with the sensation

Being Happy
by Dana Gioia

Of course it was doomed. I know that now,
but it ended so quickly, and I was young.
I hardly remember that summer in Seattle—
except for her. The city seems just a rainy backdrop.
From the moment I first saw her at the office
I was hooked. I started visiting her floor.

I couldn’t work unless I caught a glimpse of her.
Once we exchanged glances, but we never spoke.
Then at a party we found ourselves alone.
We started kissing and ended up in bed.
We talked all night. She claimed she had liked me
secretly for months. I wonder now if that was true.

Two weeks later her father had a heart attack.
While she was in Chicago, they shut down our division.
I was never one for writing letters.
On the phone we had less to say each time.
And that was it—just those two breathless weeks,
then years of mild regret and intermittent speculation.

Being happy is mostly like that. You don’t see it up close.
You recognize it later from the ache of memory.
And you can’t recapture it. You only get to choose
whether to remember or forget, whether to feel remorse
or nothing at all. Maybe it wasn’t really love.
But who can tell when nothing deeper ever came along?
