Love Story was released 45 years ago. The song lives on.
Love Story

Francis Lai, Andy Williams

Where do I begin
To tell the story of how great a love can be
The sweet love story that is older than the sea
The simple truth about the love she brings to me
Where do I start

With her first hello
She gave new meaning to this empty world of mine
There'd never be another love, another time
She came into my life and made the living fine
She fills my heart

She fills my heart with very special things
With angels' songs , with wild imaginings
She fills my soul with so much love
That anywhere I go I'm never lonely
With her around, who could be lonely
I reach for her hand-it's always there

How long does it last
Can love be measured by the hours in a day
I have no answers now but this much I can say
I know I'll need her till the stars all burn away
And she'll be there

How long does it last
Can love be measured by the hours in a day
I have no answers now but this much I can say
I know I'll need her till the stars all burn away
And she'll be there

Trumbo (2015) on the story of Dalton Trumbo, a Hollywood screenwriter blacklisted for being a communist in 1947 on the run up to the Cold War. In 1950 he served 11 months in prison after which he could not find work as Hollywood was not employing communists so to keep the country safe. Few things can go right when the freedoms of expression, ideas, or religion, are denied. Secure property rights are a necessary condition for economic progress, so are basic personal rights.

43 years ago on their last manned lunar mission, the astronauts of Apollo 17 took the first picture of planet earth in its entirety from a distance of 45,000 km. They called it blue marble. Ever since no other human was far enough from the earth to do anything similar, though there have been several whole earth shots from unmanned spacecrafts.

60 years ago Rosa Parks, a 42 year old seamstress from Montgomery Alabama, refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white man. Her act of civil disobedience took her to jail for violation of the city's racial segregation laws, but it triggered the great Civil Rights Movement that would gain strength in the 1960s.

Lisbon was the perfect place to wait. I settled easily into days of pastries on the Avenida da Liberdade. There was a festive summery feel on the square. Each day I met people who had managed to cross at the French border and I toasted and drank to our health and safety. I asked everyone about Rivesaltes, but no one had information. The Vichy border was unpredictable--but certainly men and women were still coming into Spain.

One afternoon I watched as a man touched a woman on the shoulder. She turned and fell into his arms in a swoon. Then she stood back, disentangled from his arms, and just looked at him. She stood not speaking for perhaps two minutes. "Thomaz, Thomaz," she whispered and held her palm to his face. It was a moment out of the cinema. Every day there were dramatic moments. Between sisters, between childhood friends. It was not as if I hadn't seen people reunited in Toulouse or Perpignan. But Lisbon was different, like a relief, like a summer resort where we had all finally arrived to pass the long hot days together.

Spotlight (2015) goes back to 2001 to the Boston Globe's investigation of the multiple sexual abuses of children by catholic priests going on in the Boston diocese for decades. A true lesson in investigative journalism. It's interesting to see how different things were 14 years ago, when notes were taken on paper, research on a given topic was dug from archives in newspaper paper clippings, and all cell phones were flippers.

... the endless hours I spent on lines. The Paris lines were practice for later lines in Toulouse and Perpignan. Let it suffice to say I stood for hours (...) And each day was another line. Another line, another crowd of people overdressed and pressed close together. We were refugees in Paris. It takes so little to turn anyone into a refugee. A winter coat and a scarf over an arm in June, jackets worn too long in too much heat; it droops the body down. There were those who gave in, coat unbuttoned, hanging off weary frame, hardly looking anymore like the doctors or businessmen they were just weeks ago in another city. Just the slightest indication of the old established life. Maybe a telltale gold watch, a woman's pearl-and-ruby brooch. Now they press forward, pushing to keep their place in line, hugging an oversized valise filled with valuables. After waiting for hours we were directed to other lines or told offices had shut for the afternoon. The word on every line was that people were being routed to Bretagne on the Atlantic coast, where displaced-persons centers were already up and running. Transit visas, we heard, were routinely being denied.

Desconhecida. Contexto? Nenhum.

O Medo
Carlos Drummond de Andrade
(ouvido parcialmente aqui)

Em verdade temos medo.
Nascemos escuro.
As existências são poucas:
Carteiro, ditador, soldado.
Nosso destino, incompleto.

E fomos educados para o medo.
Cheiramos flores de medo.
Vestimos panos de medo.
De medo, vermelhos rios
vadeamos.

Somos apenas uns homens
e a natureza traiu-nos.
Há as árvores, as fábricas,
Doenças galopantes, fomes.

Refugiamo-nos no amor,
este célebre sentimento,
e o amor faltou: chovia,
ventava, fazia frio em São Paulo.

Fazia frio em São Paulo...
Nevava.
O medo, com sua capa,
nos dissimula e nos berça.

Fiquei com medo de ti,
meu companheiro moreno,
De nós, de vós: e de tudo.
Estou com medo da honra.

Assim nos criam burgueses,
Nosso caminho: traçado.
Porquê morrer em conjunto?
E se todos nós vivêssemos?

Vem, harmonia do medo,
vem, ó terror das estradas,
susto na noite, receio
de águas poluídas. Muletas

do homem só. Ajudai-nos,
lentos poderes do láudano.
Até a canção medrosa
se parte, se transe e cala-se.

Faremos casas de medo,
duros tijolos de medo,
medrosos caules, repuxos,
ruas só de medo e calma.

E com asas de prudência,
com resplendores covardes,
atingiremos o cimo
de nossa cauta subida.

O medo, com sua física,
tanto produz: carcereiros,
edifícios, escritores,
este poema; outras vidas.

Tenhamos o maior pavor,
Os mais velhos compreendem.
O medo cristalizou-os.
Estátuas sábias, adeus.

Adeus: vamos para a frente,
recuando de olhos acesos.
Nossos filhos tão felizes...
Fiéis herdeiros do medo,

eles povoam a cidade.
Depois da cidade, o mundo.
Depois do mundo, as estrelas,
dançando o baile do medo.
