Primavera #26

Gosto que tudo seja real e que tudo esteja certo;

When spring comes,

If I’ve already died,
The flowers will bloom in the same way
And the trees won’t be less green than they were last Spring.
Reality doesn’t need me.

I feel incredibly happy
When I think my death has absolutely no importance.

If I knew I was going to die tomorrow,
And Spring came the day after tomorrow,
I would die peacefully, because it came the day after tomorrow.
If that’s its time, when else should it come?
I like it that everything is real and everything is right;
And I like that it would be like this even if I didn’t like it.
And so, if I die now, I die peacefully
Because everything is real and everything is right.

They can pray in Latin over my coffin if they want to.
It’s alright with me if they dance and sing all around it.
I don’t have any preferences about when I won’t even be able to have preferences.
What comes, when it comes, will be what it is.

World Poetry Day

Though all the fates

Though all the fates should prove unkind,
Leave not your native land behind.
The ship, becalmed, at length stands still;
The steed must rest beneath the hill;
But swiftly still our fortunes pace
To find us out in every place.

The vessel, though her masts be firm,
Beneath her copper bears a worm;
Around the cape, across the line,
Till fields of ice her course confine;
It matters not how smooth the breeze,
How shallow or how deep the seas,
Whether she bears Manilla twine,
Or in her hold Madeira wine,
Or China teas, or Spanish hides,
In port or quarantine she rides;
Far from New England's blustering shore,
New England's worm her hulk shall bore,
And sink her in the Indian seas,
Twine, wine, and hides, and China teas.

Não. Não tenho limites.
Quero de tudo
Tudo.
O ramo que sacudo
Fica varejado.
Já nascido em pecado,
Todos os meus pecados são mortais.
Todos tão naturais
À minha condição.
Que, quando por excepção,
Os não pratico
É que me mortifico.
Alma perdida
Antes de se perder,
Sou uma fome incontida
De viver,
E o que redime a vida
É ela não caber
Em nenhuma medida.

You are my all the world...

A Bar at the Folies-Berger, 1882, Édouard Manet

Your love and pity doth the impression fill
Which vulgar scandal stamp'd upon my brow;
For what care I who calls me well or ill,
So you o'er-green my bad, my good allow?
You are my all the world, and I must strive
To know my shames and praises from your tongue:
None else to me, nor I to none alive,
That my steel'd sense or changes right or wrong.
In so profound abysm I throw all care
Of others' voices, that my adder's sense
To critic and to flatterer stopped are.
Mark how with my neglect I do dispense:
You are so strongly in my purpose bred
That all the world besides me thinks are dead.

Boa sorte Venezuela...
_____________

Short of pharaohs, old popes (how absurd!) and rare cases of needed preservation until the funeral, embalming for future viewing became associated with prominent communist leaders. Lenin lies in a cristal coffin in his mausoleum in Moscow, Mao in Beijing, Minh in Hanoi, and the two Kim in Pyongyang. There's also the curious case of Dimitrov, whose mausoleum in Sofia was destroyed (and the body cremated) after the fall of the iron curtain and subsequent change of regime in Bulgaria in 1990.

In the soviet tradition, Hugo Chavez will be embalmed to remain forever in view at the military museum in Caracas.

That's what happens in regimes firmly based in people instead of institutions. Good luck Venezuela...

Prejudice: preconceived opinion not based on reason or experience

... or the attitude no one really feels comfortable having. The normal thing to do is therefore to deny the idea altogether, which endures the undesirable consequences of the problem. Isolation, inbreeding, and the general lack of contact with different realities, all contribute to the maintenance of prejudice, ever so present in less tolerant societies.

Prejudice becomes much more visible once people/mindsets move on from it. It takes time, but at some point, when looking back, it's hard to believe such mindset was ever prevalent. That pretty much describes the change in my approach to the whole gay marriage package. Not just marriage, also adoption, and the general set of rights given to traditional couples.

There are people in this world capable of doing good and bad. Neither is aligned with characteristics such as gender, religion, ethnicity, nationality, skin color, or sexual orientation. Adoption rules should be as strict as governments deem necessary for the protection of children. They should not be based on matters that are irrelevant for a child's good rearing. This New York Times article a few days ago provided another illustration of the obvious.
______

____________

There goes another one. I don't see myself as a cruel person (who does... most certainly neither Chavez, nor Mugabe, or Salazar), but I find it hard in days like this to separate the man who dies from the politician who overstayed his welcome and became a dictador. Today Chavez died, and I find it hard to feel sorry and sad as I would for any human being that had suffered as Chavez did in the last months of his life. I don't feel like celebrating either, but I can't say I feel sorry. Here's part of a dialogue with a brazilian friend just a little while ago... nothing like talking to a brazilian to get in better spirits ;-)

her I felt sorry... he suffered a lot. He was an idealist... even though he was no more than a dictator.
me they all start as idealists: Fidel, Salazar, Mussolini, Ceausescu, but they overstay their welcome.
her that's true.
me as a human being it is right to feel sorry for someone who dies in so much suffering; as a dictator... maybe it was the right kind of death. How about the large number of people that suffer so much under dictatorships? Salazar died with little judgement or pain... he didn't deserve it.
her to each his destiny!
me right... but some times one's destiny influences others' in the worst possible way.
her certainly. Mine: I'll be very good, so that I go while I'm sleeping like an angel...
