Times Square has a new, new thing... adding to the red steps, we now have beach chairs along Broadway to sit, see the lights and watch people and traffic go by. I sat down and (literally) waited for Godot :-)

But that is not the question. Why are we here, that is the question. And we are blessed in this, that we happen to know the answer. Yes, in this immense confusion one thing alone is clear. We are waiting for Godot to come!

O Capitão do Fim. Dobrado o Assombro,

I spent ten years teaching in prison.

I never mention it.
I went there 3 times a week.
And I got out 3 times a week.
Nothing was the same after.
I saw everything differently.
Other people, the sky, the passing of time the time that goes by.
I realized that people in prison were like me.
They could have been me or I, them.
It’s such a fine line some times.

E viva a diversidade cultural!______________

Dança da solidão
Marisa Monte
Composição: Paulinho da Viola

Solidão é lava
Que cobre tudo
Amargura em minha boca
Sorri seus dentes de chumbo...
Solidão, palavra
Cavada no coração
Resignado e mudo
No compasso da desilusão...
Viu!

Desilusão, desilusão
Danço eu, dança você
Na dança da solidão...(2x)

Camélia ficou viúva,
Joana se apaixonou,
Maria tentou a morte,
Por causa do seu amor...
Meu pai sempre me dizia:
Meu filho tome cuidado,
Quando eu penso no futuro,
Não esqueço o meu passado
Oh!...

Desilusão, desilusão
Danço eu, dança você
Na dança da solidão...(2x)

Quando vem a madrugada
Meu pensamento vagueia
Corro os dedos na viola
Contemplando a lua cheia...
Apesar de tudo existe
Uma fonte de água pura
Quem beber daquela água
Não terá mais amargura
Oh!...

St. Robinson in his Cadillac Dream
Counting Crows

Staring out of his window as the world rushes by
Arthur Robinson closes the glass and replies,
"I dream of Ballerinas and I don't know why
but I see Cadillac's sailing

I was born on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay
But Maryland and Virginia have faded away
And I keep thinking tomorrow is coming today
So I am endlessly waiting

And the comet is coming between
Me and the girl who could make it all clean
Out there in the shadow of the modern machine
Walks St. Robinson in his Cadillac dream.

Carrie's down in her basement all toe shoes and twinned
With the girl in the mirror who spins when she spins
From where you think you'll end up to the state that you're in
Your reflection approaches and then recedes again

And the comet is coming between
Me and the girl who could make it all clean
Out there in the shadow of the modern machine
Walks St. Robinson in his Cadillac dream.

I have dreamed of a black car that shimmers and drives
Down the length of the evening to the carnival side
In a house where regret is a carousel ride
We are spinning and spinning and spinning and now...

There's a hole in the ceiling down through which I fell
There's a girl in a basement coming out of her shell
And there are people who will say that they knew me so well'
I may not go to heaven
I hope you go to hell

And the comet is coming between
Me and the girl who could make it all clean
Out there in the shadow of the modern machine
Walks St. Robinson in his Cadillac dream.

Grace...

Girl with a Pearl Earring, Jan Vermeer c. 1665-6

Who will believe my verse in time to come,
If it were fill'd with your most high deserts?
Though yet, heaven knows, it is but as a tomb
Which hides your life and shows not half your parts.
If I could write the beauty of your eyes
And in fresh numbers number all your graces,
The age to come would say 'This poet lies:
Such heavenly touches ne'er touch'd earthly faces.'
So should my papers yellow'd with their age
Be scorn'd like old men of less truth than tongue,
And your true rights be term'd a poet's rage
And stretched metre of an antique song:
But were some child of yours alive that time,
You should live twice; in it and in my rhyme.

A solidão desola-me; a companhia oprime-me.

(...) But it's also true that your ultimate success as an industry is essential to the success of our democracy. It's what makes this thing work. You know, Thomas Jefferson once said that if he had the choice between a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, he would not hesitate to choose the latter.

Clearly, Thomas Jefferson never had cable news to contend with -- (laughter) -- but his central point remains: A government without newspapers, a government without a tough and vibrant media of all sorts, is not an option for the United States of America. (Applause.)

So I may not -- I may not agree with everything you write or report. I may even complain, or more likely Gibbs will complain, from time to time about how you do your jobs, but I do so with the knowledge that when you are at your best, then you help me be at my best. You help all of us who serve at the pleasure of the American people do our jobs better by holding us accountable, by demanding honesty, by preventing us from taking shortcuts and falling into easy political games that people are so desperately weary of.

And that kind of reporting is worth preserving -- not just for your sake, but for the public's. We count on you to help us make sense of a complex world and tell the stories of our lives the way they happen, and we look for you for truth, even if it's always an approximation, even if -- (laughter.)

Gastropub Derived from the combination of the words "gastronomy" and "pub", gastropub is a British term for a public house specializing in high-quality food a step above the more basic "pub grub." It was coined in 1991 when David Eyre and Mike Belben opened a pub called The Eagle in Clerkenwell, London. The word also signifies a dining trend toward combining regional cooking with quality local ingredients, and a shift from formal bistro and restaurant eating to more informal local pub dining. Ombi proudly has been at the forefront of Nashville's growing "cocktail culture," pairing carefully selected and attractively priced wine, beer and specialty cocktails with modern cuisine unbound by culinary categories and without the elevated expense and pretension.

... never heard the term, but I quite like it!

Drive
by Dawn Landes
You've had a hard time living with a hard heart.
You hardly feel a thing and you don't know where to start.
It's all that you want and you want, you want, but it won't change a thing.
'Cause it won't be long, it won't be long, it won't be long, long
You can make it safe.

It won't go away. It's coming after you all day, surrounding.
When you look at me that way, I don't have a thing to say,
But it just found me.

Drive. C'mon, c'mon and drive.
C'mon, c'mon and drive...

Maybe it's bad luck, living one life for long.
When you leave everything, it's so hard to go home.

It won't go away. It's coming after you all day, surrounding.
When you look at me that way, I don't have a thing to say,
But it just found me. I can't walk away.

Drive....

I can't walk away.
I can't walk away.

Just sail away.

I do totally unnecessary and silly things.

Came home today and stopped by the mailboxes to get my mail. Instead of going up one floor to the parking lot (as usual) and then two more floors up to get to my apartment, I just walked on the lower covered parking lot (it was raining) and then went up two floors. When I put the key at the door it wouldn’t turn on the lock… I then looked up and the number at the top of the door was 207 instead of 307. I had messed up the floor again, but the previous times I noticed before actually trying to open the door.

Annoyed at my own stupidity I start walking back hoping that at least no one was home.
I was half way down the corridor when I heard the door opening in the distance. I stopped and turned back to face the puzzled guy: sorry man, that was me, I’m on the wrong floor… sorry about that!

He waves back:
not a problem!

I like your hat!

First heard it 8 years back. Busy NYC street. I’m waiting for the WALK sign to cross the street. Traffic is going by and pedestrians accumulate on both sides. The last car burns the yellow sign and immediately the pedestrians start crossing. I mind my own business and look straight ahead, but the intentional touch on my arm makes me turn my head back (still walking) that’s when he yells it back (not stopping either). Clearly not trying to make an impression as we’re never gonna see each other again… he must have really liked my hat.  Have none like that one: I like it a lot, but I don’t use it that often… I’m reminded of it every time I see a movie from the 1950s, all men wore such hats at some point.

Today was the second time. Had just given a step to start crossing the street on a DON’T WALK sign, but stopped immediately when I realized a pickup truck was rightfully turning right. The pickup also stopped allowing me to continue, but I stepped back to the sidewalk and signed with my hand that he was clear to go. When they turned the guy sitting on the front passenger seat, got really close. With the window rolled down he let it out quietly.
Again, never gonna see me again, so he must have really liked the hat… but who doesn’t like a red sox hat?!

Great game tonight at (the new) Yankees stadium… can’t believe I’ve had ESPN since August, but only realized it today!
