Caprichos #293

Over the past few weeks I've been running an experiment that consists on taking the same picture with two different cameras. I'll be posting some pairs of pictures in the next few days. You can cast your votes!

In the mean time here's a very simple pasta recipe:

- boil broccoli, broccoli rabe or broccolini for a few minutes and drain the water.
boil some pasta, preferably orecchiette.
- sauté a couple of longitudinally cut garlic cloves, after they are golden add the broccoli.
- add pine nuts and previously cut raisins. Stir.
- add the pasta and stir.

Mexer.
- Juntar a massa e mexer.

Inverno in Abruzzo

Deus nobis haec otia fecit*

The Music Lesson, Johannes Vermeer, 1662-5

Tim's Vermeer (2013) documents the search for Vermeer's exact technique, beyond the notion of perspective, the use of geometry, or the camera obscura. Vermeer's outstanding work could be the result of the ingenious use of optical devices, mirrors, the laws of physics and a tremendous amount of patience. Tim Jenison's obsession leads him into the passionate journey of replicating The Music Lesson. Over the course of five years this man, who is not an artist and has never been trained in painting, conversed with art historians, museum curators, painters, scientists, and doctors, in order to assess the plausibility of his theory. Only then did he embark on the audacious task of assembling the exact room where Vermeer painted The Music Lesson to the smallest detail --a remarkable achievement on its own, given that most of the elements in the painting are not readily available-- so that he was finally ready to start painting.

And there we have it: digital photography quality with seventeenth century technology!
____________

Inverno #25

And on the greenest day of the year, Washington DC has become snow-white again, triggering a new government shutdown (not a good day to go to the national archives!), just three days ahead of the official start of spring.
In Nashville, just cold.

Coisas que não mudam #249

There are things that do not change in archival research: you have to go to the archives, some of the information you want is held in microfilm form, which makes you stare at a monochromatic screen for hours while rolling the film to locate the information you need. What is different at the United States National Archives in Washington DC is that once you get admitted to the building (through the security procedures and the issuing of a (free!) research card) and you locate the collections you want to consult, everything is self-served. Meaning, you have access to all the microfilms you want from 9 to 5, one at a time... wise, especially when you need a total of 84 films. So you go through the file cabinets, you locate the correct drawer, you get the numbered microfilm you need, which you then load to a microfilm viewer. Now, there are the traditional microfilm viewers that project the image on a blank surface that you look at, and there are modern microfilm machines connected to a computer that allow you to see the information on the screen and either print it in paper (5¢ a copy) or extract the image to a flashdrive, for free. NEAT!

Everyone has heard the world famous song Fernando by Abba, but who has heard it in its original Swedish version? I hadn't either, until I saw what Pink Martini and the Von Trapps did with it in their latest album Dream a Little Dream. To turn a melancholic song (reminding of the sad Peruvian mountain flutes) into the most lively samba rhythm has Pink Martini's trade signature all over it... remarkable!
____________

Fernando

Lyrics & Music Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson

Varför sörjer du Fernando?
Varför klingar din gitarr i moll,

Die Dorfmusik (action starts at minute 2.45)
Lyrics & Music: Mart Fryberg, Theo von Dopp and Peter Kristen
Sung by: Georg & Maria von Trapp's great-grandhildren

Wenn am Sonntag Abend die Dorfmusi' spielt
Hei didel dideldei didel dideldum,
Jedes kleine Madel die Liebe gleich fühlt.
Hei didel dideldei didel dideldum,
Hei didel dideldei didel dideldum.

Leis fragt er, hast' du mi' no' gern,
Da klingt's von fern:

Wenn am Sonntag Abend die Dorfmusi' spielt
Hei didel dideldei didel dideldum.
Jedes kleine Madel die Liebe gleich fühlt.
Hei didel dideldei didel dideldum,
Hei didel dideldei didel dideldum.

Schwiegermutter blase mal
S'ist 'ne Ratz im Saal
Schwiegermutter blase mal, blas' nochmal

Denn die Kathi will immer nochmal.
Weil am Sonntag Abend die Dorfmusi' spielt
Hei didel dideldei didel dideldum, Juhu!

The Lunchbox (2013) uses Mumbai's gigantic lunch delivery system of tiffins from homes or restaurants into offices to tell the story of a lonely widower living a mechanical existence and a young wife with no proper occupation, other than caring for her child and preparing her husband's (who doesn't really much care for her) lunch. Though the setting is rather light and uplifting, the movie focuses on much deeper issues and is not necessarily the crowd pleaser.

Two of the three oscar nominated short documentaries that I saw are worth mentioning:
The Lady at number 6: music saved my life (2013): 39 minutes of a life lesson in wisdom, optimism and attitude. In my mind remain two very strong thoughts:

Alice Herz-Sommer: Your life depends on you. Not on life; on you!
Zudenka: Survival was a matter of attitude towards the situation. And the situation could change every five minutes.

Alice passed away two weeks ago on February 23, 2014.
_____________

Facing Fear (2013): the 29 minutes recount the story of an incredible decades old hate crime, whose characters (victim and aggressor) coincidentally met again in different walks of life. The movie shows how they coped with the difficult process of healing and forgiving and how an unlikely strong friendship was forged. In one word, tolerance.

Inverno #24

Another winter storm is coming, this time extending from as far south as Missouri all the way to Washington DC and into the Northeast. The forecasts in Washington DC predict there will be a foot of snow on the ground by tomorrow afternoon when all is said and done. Just my luck, when I travelled to DC to spend three business days at the national archives, which will likely be closed tomorrow... on the up side, it's good to be in the company of friends that would welcome a postponing of my return trip to Nashville.
