Proper care in old age is a difficult task as people who were once young and able must, at times reluctantly, rely on others for the most basic needs. The situation is more dramatic for Holocaust survivors.
Once, they were forcefully taken from their homes, placed in ghettos or concentration camps, which they survived against all odds. Moving to a nursing home for the need of adequate care must be very difficult for any old person in perfect judgement, but the previous trauma of Holocaust survivors leads them to refuse. In-home care by specialized nurses and social workers is expensive and may not be as frequent as needed. The estimates point for half a million ageing Holocaust survivors around the world.
