Today I learned about the works of the Weiner Werkstätte, Vienna's workshop of artists specializing in interior decoration as well as fashion and jewelry, from 1903 to 1932. In the age of postcards, this simple element became a powerful vehicle of advertising for the company. As the first two decades of the twentieth century wore off, so did Vienna's Golden Age and by the early 1930s the demand for such luxury products was a pale image of years prior. The sobriety, and sometimes the extravagance of the designs lend it a flavor of the wealthy environment in which all art thrived. The apparent resemblance with the work of Klimt is not a coincidence.
