Rush (2013) tells the unrepeatable story of the duel between Niki Lauda and James Hunt. Two very different pilots, with very different objectives in life but a common love for car racing: on Lauda's side carefully planned, studied and worked on; on Hunt's, spontaneous, erratic and eventually lucky. The face off between the two reached its climax in 1976. It was the year of Lauda's spectacular accident, rather more impressive recovery and return to racing.
Hunt won the championship that year but never again repeated the feat. Lauda pressed on and became champion again twice over. It was the genius of Lauda that made me fall for Formula 1 in the 1980s. I only remember him disfigured already... how could I not? Never heard of James Hunt till I saw the movie's trailer. No more than a minor flamboyant but forgettable detail in Formula 1's history.
