I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.
--Martin Luther King, Jr.

This paragraph is all over the internet today, but the actual quotation is only:
"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
The first sentence is not Martin Luther King's, but merely an introduction. Which is not to say it is not apposite.
With much less internet success, the press secretary of the Holy See remarked that:
"Faced with a man's death, a Christian never rejoices, but reflects on everyone's grave responsibilities before God and men, and hopes and endeavours that every event shall not occasion a further rise of hatred, but of peace."
Thanks for the correction. I like the exact quotation better... keeps it to the point.
