No Times de hoje #117

Today's Times brings an article on Portugal's dive into the clean energy sector, started five years ago and already showing results. The objective of this series of articles is to expose examples of clean energy beyond fossil fuels and compare them to the US case, therefore it's not hard for Portugal to look good on this one.

To be fair though, it seems an impressive effort on the part of the government to achieve so much in so little time. In 2009 Portugal ranked third in wind-generated electricity output (behind Iceland and Denmark) and it's supposed to rank second (behind Denmark only) by 2025, as forecasted by IHS Emerging Energy Research, increasing its share of power fueled by renewable energy by 30 percentage points (from 21.6% to 51.4%).

Let's hope that by the time the government gets out of the clean-energy business it's still sustainable.
