In 1803, the Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States territory when Americans anexed 2.147 million square kilometers of land under French claim. France received $15m, $3.75m of which were pardoned debt... that's how such matters got settled back in the day. 207 years ago today, a formal ceremony was held in St. Louis (in current Missouri located in the purchased area) for ownership transfer. The much smaller Louisiana state joined the Union in 1812.
