Foi neste dia #317 (1920)

97 years ago today the XIX Amendment to the United States constitution was approved prohibiting any United States citizen from being denied the right to vote on the basis of sex. Three-quarters of the states (that is, 36 state legislatures) had to ratify the proposed amendment for it to become part of the constitution. Tennessee was the 36th state to pass the amendment on August 18 1920, with the narrowest margin of 50 votes in 99 representatives.

On November 2, of that same year, more than 8 million women across the United States voted in elections for the first time. It took more than 60 years for all states to ratify the amendment. Notoriously last was Mississippi in 1984.
