I've been looking for this quote for ages without success. I've just found your blog. Do you know the origin of the quote - where in Tovey's work it comes from?
Thanks for replying, anyway. In case you're interested, I first heard the Tovey quote in a talk by Andras Schiff on Beethoven's Tempest Sonata, Op.31 No.2. All these talks, which are full of insights, are online at https://www.theguardian.com/music/classical/page/0,,1943867,00.html and the one on the Tempest is at http://download.guardian.co.uk/sys-audio/Arts/Culture/2006/11/30/17_dmin_op31-2.mp3 . Sadly I don't, and I can't exactly recall where I saw when I posted it. Perhaps I heard it at the classical radio. Sorry I can't be of any help.
