The impressive coverage of the New York Times' about the upcoming World Cup almost makes the reader believe that Americans care for soccer. Surely, the article "Watching the Word's Game in the World's City" makes sense: in a big city like New York (with multiple immigrant communities), anyone cares for anything.
Last year in Nashville, while having lunch with a Brazilian friend at a local Applebee's, we noticed a TV set showing a live soccer game. The US was playing Germany in Washington DC and though it was a friendly game, it was lively and ended up 4-3 for the US. The restaurant was pretty full but we were the only people paying attention to the broadcast... no one else even realized their national soccer team was making Germany look bad.
The entertaining (almost child-like) diagram, not the actual games, is more likely to be successful among Americans.
