Há 639 anos assinava-se em Londres o tratado responsável pela mais antiga aliança diplomática da história.

Em primeiro lugar concordamos em convénio que haverá deste dia em diante... uma amizade verdadeira, fiel, constante, mútua e perpétua em união e aliança, assim como um afecto sincero, e que como verdadeiros e fiéis amigos que seremos doravante, deveremos reciprocamente ser amigos para amigos e inimigos para inimigos, assistindo, mantendo e defendendo-nos mutuamente por mar e por terra, contra todos aqueles que possam viver ou morrer. (...)"

In the first place we settle and covenant that there shall be from this day forward... true, faithful, constant, mutual and perpetual friendships, unions, alliances, and needs of sincere affection, and that as true and faithful friends we shall henceforth, reciprocally, be friends to friends and enemies to enemies, and shall assist, maintain, and uphold each other mutually, by sea and by land, against all men that may live and die. (...)"
