What the Heart Cannot Forget
by Joyce Sutphen
Everything remembers something. The rock, its fiery bed,
cooling and fissuring into cracked pieces, the rub
of watery fingers along its edge.
The cloud remembers being elephant, camel, giraffe,
remembers being a veil over the face of the sun,
gathering itself together for the fall.
The turtle remembers the sea, sliding over and under
its belly, remembers legs like wings, escaping down
the sand under the beaks of savage birds.
The tree remembers the story of each ring, the years
of drought, the floods, the way things came
walking slowly towards it long ago.
And the skin remembers its scars, and the bone aches
where it was broken. The feet remember the dance,
and the arms remember lifting up the child.
The heart remembers everything it loved and gave away,
everything it lost and found again, and everyone
it loved, the heart cannot forget.

Já nem sei porquê
guardei p'ra mim
Talvez porque me soava tonto
Dito ali
Ao espelho enfim
Ficava assim
Sabendo a pouco
Nas palavras
que pensei p'ra ti
Nunca achava nada novo
E por nada achar senti
Que um dia sim
Estaria pronto
E só com uma voz
e uma guitarra, eu fiz
Parar a rua inteira
Parar a rua inteira
Vim tocar p'ra ti
Uma canção que te escrevi
Quando alguém me diz:
“O teu amor não mora aqui!”
Fiz canções
Que me soavam bem
Que encantavam quem as ouvia
A cantar imaginei
Nós mais além
Como seria?
Pelo mundo todo
Te cantei
E voltei a passar aqui
Terás filhos,
Estarás bem?
É que ninguém
Sabe de ti
E só com uma voz
e uma guitarra, eu fiz
Parar a rua inteira
Parar a rua inteira
Vim tocar p'ra ti
Uma canção que te escrevi
Quando alguém me diz:
“O teu amor não mora aqui!”
…e a vizinha diz:
Toca essa canção p'ra mim…
E foi então assim…
Já nem sei porquê
guardei p'ra mim
Talvez porque me soava tonto
Dito ali
Ao espelho enfim
Ficava assim
Sabendo a pouco
Nas palavras
que pensei p'ra ti
Nunca achava nada novo

Some Woman to Some Man
by Edith Wharton
We might have loved each other after all,
Have lived and learned together! Yet I doubt it;
You asked, I think, too great a sacrifice,
Or else, perhaps, I rate myself too dear.
Whichever way the difference lies between us,
Would common cares have helped to lessen it,
A common interest, and a common lot?
Who knows indeed? We choose our path, and then
Stand looking back and sighing at our choice,
And say: “Perhaps the other road had led
To fruitful valleys dozing in the sun.”
Perhaps—perhaps—but all things are perhaps,
And either way there lies a doubt, you know.
We’ve but one life to live, and fifty ways
To live it in, and little time to choose
The one in fifty that will suit us best,
And so the end is, that we part, and say:
“We might have loved each other after all!”
