On the Waterfront (1954) the timeless argument and the difficult dilemmas keep the audience curious until the end, but the period piece is evident by the minute. Since 1954, changing lifestyles, attitudes, the role of women in society, acting schools, not to talk about technology (the advent of containers completely changed the occupation of longshoremen), made today's world a pale resemblance of Hoboken's waterfront in the 1950s, when building rooftops had pigeon coops and hidden compliments came in weird forms.
