To mark the centennial anniversary of the October revolution yesterday I went to see The Death of Stalin (2017) a movie loosely tied to events surrounding the death of Stalin. In a regime ruled by fear, dissimulation and make-belief become so engrained in daily life that nothing of what you see is real... even tortured political prisoners convulsively cry the death of Stalin.
The void caused by the death of a strong leader is bound to generate struggles among the high circles of power but concealment of everyone's true motives gives rise to truly comedic moments throughout the film, which is nevertheless not a parody. The rise of Khrushchev above Malenkov and Beria (as well as all the other members of the central committee), and his potentially well intended de-Stalinization of the Soviet Union, were still based on his personal leadership and the elimination of opponents. What could we expect? A dictator dictates... that's what he does. (longer version here)
