Victoria and Abdul (2017) is based on the true story of the late years of Queen Victoria and an Indian servant, which upset the natural order of the court and irked many in the royal household and circle.

Beyond concerns of historical accuracy, for me the movie is about the loneliness of old age and the appearance of a loyal and kind soul that pays attention, tells stories of far away places and cultures, rekindling the interest in life that so often is gone in old people. Truman Capote once said:

Life is a moderately good play with a badly written third act.

Despite having everything she wanted, queen Victoria's third act was unhappy until Abdul Karim showed up to brighten her last days. Had he not been an Indian perhaps there would have been no scandal. Probably he would have conformed to the rules and would have never befriended the queen. But Victoria's last act was to be rewritten... lucky her!
