Bacino di San Marco nel giorno dell'Ascensione, Canaletto, ca. 1732
Canaletto and the Art of Venice (2017) is a documentary on the royal collection of works by Canaletto at the Queen's Gallery in Buckingham Palace. The film talks about the life of Canaletto, the art and technique of his paintings, but also of his main sponsor (Joseph Smith, British consul in Venice), of the reasons behind his success outside of Venice (especially in Britain), and how this collection came to be in the possession of the British crown. Here is an 8-minute summary of the documentary.
