Enriching the Earth
by Wendell Berry

To enrich the earth I have sowed clover and grass
to grow and die. I have plowed in the seeds
of winter grains and of various legumes,
their growth to be plowed in to enrich the earth.
I have stirred into the ground the offal
and the decay of the growth of past seasons
and so mended the earth and made its yield increase.
All this serves the dark. I am slowly falling
into the fund of things. And yet to serve the earth,
not knowing what I serve, gives a wideness
and a delight to the air, and my days
do not wholly pass. It is the mind's service,
for when the will fails so do the hands
and one lives at the expense of life.
After death, willing or not, the body serves,
entering the earth. And so what was heaviest
and most mute is at last raised up into song.

So I'll never be your lady
And I'll never be your girl
Although I love you madly
I'll never be your pearl

And when you come home at night
It won't be me
It won't be me who holds you tight
And it makes me wanna cry, and wanna love
And wanna die
Because without you nothing's right

So I'll never be your lady
There's an ocean we can't cross
So much fear, so much breaking
So much love and such a loss

But when you come home at night
It won't be me
It won't be me
It won't be me who holds you tight
And it makes me wanna cry
And wanna love
And wanna die
Because without you nothing's right

Oh, well, well, listen to me, baby
Our love is like gold
Just like gold from the mind
I hope I made you happy
And that you'll think of us sometimes

And I know when you go home at night, I know
It won't be me
It won't be me who holds you tight
And it makes me wanna cry
And wanna love
And wanna die
Because without you nothing's right
Because without you nothing's right

Losing My Sight
by Lisel Mueller

I never knew that by August
the birds are practically silent,
only a twitter here and there.
Now I notice. Last spring
their noisiness taught me the difference
between screamers and whistlers and cooers
and O, the coloraturas.
I have already mastered
the subtlest pitches in our cat's
elegant Chinese. As the river
turns muddier before my eyes,
its sighs and little smacks
grow louder. Like a spy,
I pick up things indiscriminately:
the long approach of a truck,
car doors slammed in the dark,
the night life of animals—shrieks and hisses,
sex and plunder in the garage.
Tonight the crickets spread static
across the air, a continuous rope
of sound extended to me,
the perfect listener.

[on July 31, 1932] A guy named Adolf Hitler won an election in 1932. He won an election, and 50 million people died as a result of that election in World War II, including 6 million Jews. So, what I learned as a little kid is that politics is, in fact, very important.

I choose to hide
But I look for you all the time
I choose to run
But I'm begging for you to come
I wanna break
But I know that you can take
I stay a while
To be sure that you're by my side

Don't look at me, just look inside
'Cause I can go through
Tell me, are you going tired
Of what I don't do
I wanna see, I wanna fight
'Cause I don't feel scared
Honey, if you care

I choose to find
Things that you left behind
I choose to stare
But I can take you anywhere
I wanna stay
But my soul leaves you anyway
Can close the door
And, love, could you give me more

Don't look at me, just look inside
'Cause I can go through
Tell me, are you going tired
Of what I don't do
I wanna see, I wanna fight
'Cause I don't feel scared
Honey, if you care

Choose love, choose love, love
Choose love, choose love

Don't wanna hear, I wanna fight
'Cause this time I won't be wrong
And I can waste this precious time
Asking where do I belong
So let me know your love is real
'Cause this time you won't control
Tell me, please, what do you feel?
Do I have to save your soul?

Choose love, choose love, love
Choose love, choose love, love

The Changing Light
by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

The changing light
at San Francisco
is none of your East Coast light
none of your
pearly light of Paris
The light of San Francisco
is a sea light
an island
light
And the light of fog
blanketing the hills
drifting in at night
through the Golden Gate
to lie on
the city at dawn
And then the halcyon late mornings
after the fog burns off
and the sun paints white houses
with the sea
light of Greece
with sharp clean shadows
making the town look like
it had just been
painted

But the wind comes up at four o’clock
sweeping the
hills

And then the veil of light of early evening

And then another scrim
when the new night fog
floats in
And in that vale of light
the city drifts
anchorless
upon the ocean

That is the true season of love, when we believe that we alone can love, that no one could ever have loved so before us, and that no one will love in the same way after us.

Por una cabeza
Carlos Gardel

Por una cabeza, de un noble potrillo
Que justo en la raya, afloja al llegar
Y que al regresar, parece decir
No olvides, hermano

Si ella me olvida
Qué importa perderme
Mil veces la vida
Para qué vivir

Cuántos desengaños, por una cabeza
Yo juré mil veces no vuelvo a insistir
Pero si un mirar me hiere al pasar
Su boca de fuego
Otra vez quiero besar

Basta de carreras, se acabo la timba
Un final reñido ya no vuelvo a ver
Pero si algún pingo llega a ser fija el domingo
Yo me juego entero
Qué le voy a hacer

Por una cabeza, todas las locuras
Su boca que besa
Borra la tristeza
Calma la amargura

Por una cabeza
Si ella me olvida
Qué importa perderme
Mil veces la vida
Para qué vivir
