Lo! in the orient...
Lo! in the orient when the gracious light
Lifts up his burning head, each under eye
Doth homage to his new-appearing sight,
Serving with looks his sacred majesty;
And having climb'd the steep-up heavenly hill,
Resembling strong youth in his middle age,
yet mortal looks adore his beauty still,
Attending on his golden pilgrimage;
But when from highmost pitch, with weary car,
Like feeble age, he reeleth from the day,
The eyes, 'fore duteous, now converted are
From his low tract and look another way:
So thou, thyself out-going in thy noon,
Unlook'd on diest, unless thou get a son.
William Shakespeare, Sonnet VII

I've never been much of a feminist. I believe that all people should work hard to get to any position of power of influence. I don't therefore support quotas or any other type of special treatment for women. I do however, recognize all those women who fought for equal rights. Today is the 94th anniversary of the passing of the 19th amendment to the US constitution giving women the right to vote. Here are some alluding images, as a reminder of the many women who still cannot vote.

Reiquiavique < Dublin < Londres < Copenhaga < Bruxelas < Amesterdão < Berna < Berlim < Praga < Paris < Riga < Liubliana < Viena < Estocolmo < Helsínquia < Zagreb < Budapeste < Belgrado < Bucareste < Sofia < Ancara < Roma < Tirana < Madrid < Atenas < Lisboa
Lisboa < Tunes < Argel < Rabat
Lisboa < Tunes < Argel < Sevilha < Rabat < Casablanca < Tânger < Faro

On May 27 1940, foreign affairs editor Hamilton Fish Armstrong wrote an article for the New York Times about the dramatic refugee situation in France. Eighteen days before the fall of Paris to Hitler, thousands of jews were fleeing to the south of France running from fierce battles in the north. Many came from Belgium and the Netherlands, both occupied by the nazis since May 10, with everything they owned and could carry.

Since this ferocious struggle began in Belgium and Flanders, civilian refugees have been flooding down across the country, making every crossroads, every village and every railway junction a station of misery. They arrive in boxcars, bundled in the straw. They come by road in every conceivable sort of vehicle.

In the Bordeaux* region three days ago I saw two fire engines that had come through from Brussels. Baby carriages, a sewing machine and bundles of every shape were piled on one. Ten or fifteen persons were packed into the other. The women, with children and babies on their laps, their heads covered with pieces of oilcloth to keep off the rain.
Thousands are on bicycles with everything they own in the world strapped on the handlebars. Many of them have now been on the road for twelve or fourteen days. (...)

With Memorial Day around the corner, the New York Times brings an article that remembers the fallen military in the current wars. The article focuses on those in the military whose job is to prepare the remains arriving from overseas so that they are ready to be returned to their families for the funeral. The amount of care and solemnity that the whole process takes place is commendable.
About 6,700 service members of the US armed forces have returned home in coffins, from Afghanistan and Iraq. Nearly all went through Dover air force base in Maryland, whose mortuary staff has grown from 7 in 2001 to more than 60 today. At the peak of the war in 2006 and 2007, 10 to 20 bodies would arrive each day.

Sergeant Deynes began putting the final touches on Captain Blanchard’s uniform immediately after it returned from the base tailor, who had sewn captain’s bars onto the jacket shoulders and purple and gold aviator braids onto the sleeves — three inches above the bottom, to be exact. The sergeant starched and pressed a white shirt, ironed a crease into the pants, steamed wrinkles out of the jacket and then rolled a lint remover over all of it, twice.
Gently, he laid the pieces onto a padded table. Black socks protruded from the pants and white gloves from the sleeves. The funeral would be a closed coffin, but it all still had to look right.
“They are not going to see it,” he said. “I do it for myself.”
A week later, Captain Blanchard’s remains were flown to his home state, Washington, where he was buried in a military cemetery near Spokane.
His mother, Laura Schactler, said Captain Blanchard enlisted in the Marines after high school and served two tours in Iraq before marrying and returning home to attend college on an Army R.O.T.C. scholarship. After graduating, he learned to fly Apache attack helicopters, fulfilling a boyhood dream.
Before his funeral, Ms. Schactler spent time alone with her son but did not open his coffin. But later that night, she said, her husband and two other sons did, wanting to say one last farewell.
Inside, they saw a uniform, white gloves crossed, buttons gleaming, perfect in every detail.

My recent research has taken me to the New York passenger lists held by the US national archives and available online on ancestry.com upon subscription.
I'm mostly interested in the transatlantic steamers arriving New York harbor coming from Lisbon in the early 1940s, but there are also some Pan-Am flights. Then as now, customs had to be cleared by passengers and crew. Immigration forms always asked plenty of questions so there's a lot of detail about passengers, whereas crews are just listed by name and task. I was surprised to see that some flights carried only 11 passengers (some none at all, just mail) while requiring a full crew of 12 (list below)... how inefficient!
I then went to investigate the type of plane. The Boeing 314, also known as Yankee (or Atlantic*, or Pacific**, depending on the ocean it was flying over) clipper, was Pan-Am's flying boat. It started flying in 1939 and initially served purely commercial purposes, transporting the wealthy of the day across continents, when cruise travel was staple. In 1940, the Atlantic clipper flew regularly from Lisbon to New York (flight affidavit below), stopped in Horta-Azores (photo below), and again in Bermuda, before it reached destination roughly 26 hours later... a huge improvement on the 10-day steamer voyage.
The attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 forced the US into World War II and pressed the clipper into carrying personnel and equipement to the war fronts in Europe and the Pacific. The clipper was finally retired in 1946. Of the dozen Yankee clippers ever built, three were lost to accidents, but only one resulted in fatalities. On February 22 1943, 24 out of 39 passengers and crew lost their lives in a landing accident on the Tagus in Lisbon.
*Here a video about the original atlantic clipper flight from New York to Southampton, England.
**Here, perhaps the most dramatic flight of the pacific clipper in January 1942 from Auckland New Zealand to New York.

Today's news splash: Yahoo! buys tumblr. for $1.1bn
For those, like I, who have only a very vague idea of what tumblr is, here's some help. In today's internet world there's three groups of people: those who think tumblr (or any other somewhat recent internet success) may well be a new brand of detergent; those who use tumblr; and those who invented tumblr. The first and second groups are behind the curve, though the second group keeps pace until the next micro-blogging invention comes out. People in the third group, aka inventors, are extremely rare and their professional progress is rather unusual.
David Karp, dropped out of high school in 2001 at age 14 and never went to college. Ever since, he has participated in several internet startups, of which tumblr is a distinguished detail. Such detail has earned Karp $250m in the announced yahoo deal and made him join the restricted circle of multi-milionaires under 30, who typically wear jeans, sneakers, and t-shirts... such a very different style from almost a century ago.
There's always been people with entrepreneurial potential. It is wise however, to realize how rare they are, and how their choices would probably be disastrous for the population at large. Life time earnings of college dropouts are on average, 47% lower than those of college graduates; high school dropouts, 80% lower.* You'd need many a Karp, Zuckerberg, Gates or Jobs to change these figures around!
_________

So remote is Saint Helena that it was place of exile for many prisoners, Napoleon the most famous.

... this bloody tirant, Time...
Les reflets du temps, 1928, René Magritte
But wherefore do not you a mightier way
Make war upon this bloody tyrant, Time?
And fortify yourself in your decay
With means more blessed than my barren rhyme?
Now stand you on the top of happy hours,
And many maiden gardens yet unset
With virtuous wish would bear your living flowers,
Much liker than your painted counterfeit:
So should the lines of life that life repair,
Which this, Time's pencil, or my pupil pen,
Neither in inward worth nor outward fair,
Can make you live yourself in eyes of men.
To give away yourself keeps yourself still,
And you must live, drawn by your own sweet skill.
William Shakespeare, Sonnet XVI
