Mommy-made things...
L, who has been exceedingly kind to me lately, is going to be very happy! Isn't that one of life's goals?

Não me procures ali

Não me procures ali
Onde os vivos visitam
Os chamados mortos.
Procura-me
Dentro das grandes águas
Nas praças
Num fogo coração
Entre cavalos, cães,
Nos arrozais, no arroio
Ou junto aos pássaros
Ou espelhado
Num outro alguém,
Subindo um duro caminho
Pedra, semente, sal
Passos da vida. Procura-me ali.
Vivo.

Eight Days a Week (2016) tells the story of the Beatles touring years from 1962 to 1966... four mad years of meteoric success and continuous touring. The non-stop screaming everywhere they went must have been quite overwhelming for kids of 19 to 22. The movie ends with a 30-min edited version of their concert at Shea Stadium on August 15 of 1965 before an unprecedented audience of 55,600. In the absence of social media, the Beatles were the first band of the masses, which makes their progress nothing short of remarkable.

No Times de hoje #168

Proper care in old age is a difficult task as people who were once young and able must, at times reluctantly, rely on others for the most basic needs. The situation is more dramatic for Holocaust survivors.

Once, they were forcefully taken from their homes, placed in ghettos or concentration camps, which they survived against all odds. Moving to a nursing home for the need of adequate care must be very difficult for any old person in perfect judgement, but the previous trauma of Holocaust survivors leads them to refuse. In-home care by specialized nurses and social workers is expensive and may not be as frequent as needed. The estimates point for half a million ageing Holocaust survivors around the world. The New York Times brings an insightful article on their situation in present day Budapest.

My first attempt at carbonara a few days back...
... kind of proud to have, singlehandedly, put together a bunch of ingredients I don't ever use or buy, such as bacon, brandy, eggs and parmesan. Why were all of these ingredients available in the house, one might ask? Well, let's just say that (better) carbonara has been made in the house before.

I Wish*
by Robert Ward

I wish you the courage to be warm when
the world would prefer that you be cool.
I wish you success sufficient to your needs;
I wish you failure to temper that success.
I wish you joy in all your days; I wish you
sadness so that you may better measure
that joy.

I wish you gladness to overbalance grief.
I wish you humor and a twinkle in the eye.
I wish you glory and the strength to bear
its burdens.

I wish you sunshine on your path and
storms to season your journey.
I wish you peace in the world in which
you live and in the smallest corner of the
heart where truth is kept.
I wish you faith to help define your living
and your life.

More I cannot wish you, except perhaps
love, to make all the rest worthwhile.

Coisas bonitas #2

Sempre pronta:

- para me ajudar e dar conselhos, especialmente em áreas que não domino;
- para não me deixar caír como, nesta fotografia tirada por volta de 1977-78, ainda que eu pareça um bocadinho apertada... já lá diz o ditado: o que aperta segura;
- para me consolar como eu nunca serei capaz de fazer;

Sully (2016) tells the recent story of US Airways flight 1549 on January 15, 2009 that landed on the Hudson river with 155 souls on board. All survived. The remarkable work of pilots and crew (that evacuated the plane in 4 minutes) was complemented by that of rescue teams who in 24 minutes rescued everyone to safety on a very cold day in January.

Tom Hanks acting and Clint Eastwood directing make a wonderful combination.

Still, I Give Thanks
by Marie Reynolds

Day fourteen in the radiation waiting room
and the elderly man sitting next to me
says he gives thanks every day because
he can still roll over and climb out of bed.
We wear the same cotton gowns—repeating
pattern of gold stars on a field of blue—that gape
in back, leaving our goose bump flesh exposed.
Lately, I too, give thanks for the things I can do—
sit, stand, take my next breath. Thanks for my feet,
my fingers, the ears on my head. I give thanks
for the scrub jay’s audacious cries outside
my window at dawn. He is a hungry soul,
forever foraging to feed his mortal appetite.
Like him, I want more of everything: more light,
more life, another cup of Darjeeling tea and a silver
teaspoon to stir it with. I want to see my mother again,
before the winter settles in, and when she’s gone,
I want her porcelain Madonna. I want my doctor
to use the word “cure” just once. Each day, supine
on the table, I listen to the razoring whine
of the radiation beam. It hurts to lie still,
the table sharp as an ice floe beneath the bones
of my spine. Still, I give thanks for the hands
that position me, their measurements and marking
pens, the grid of green light that slides like silk
across my skin. I close my eyes and think
of the jay. We wear the same raiment: blood, bone,
muscle. Most days I still feel joy. I give thanks
for that bird, too—invisible feathers, invisible wings—
a quickening, felt deep within the body, vigorous and fleeting.

Coisas bonitas #1
