Coisas que não mudam #166

The summer's been busy...

from walking the New York streets,

to enjoying the beach in the Algarve,

as well as the mountains of Beira Baixa,

further enjoying the food, the sea and the hikes in Terceira island,

getting to know the lovely island of Santa Maria,

and finally exotic Hawai'i.
It is now time now to get back to work!

e verde.

O fim de semana foi óptimo,

mas curto!

Less than two months after the capture of Ratko Mladic, Serbia's authorities arrested Goran Hadzic, the last of the fugitives indicted of crimes against humanity in the 1990s Balkan's war. On the run since 2004, when he was indicted, Hadzic will now have to respond in person at the Hague's international court. At the age of 52 it will be hard, but not impossible that the defense strategy should turn to the "too ill to be fit for trial" thesis, but let's wait and see.

A few pages in history are hard to turn, but at least in this case, Serbia seems to have done all that could be done, though late.

_______________

Cantiga dos Ais

Armindo Mendes de Carvalho (1927-1988)
Os ais de todos os dias,
os ais de todas as noites.
Ais do fado e do folclore,
o ai do ó ai ó linda.

Os ais que vêm do peito,
ai pobre dele, coitado
que tão cedo se finou!

Os ais que vêm da alma.
Ais d’ amor e de comédia,
ai pobre da rapariga
que se deixou enganar…
ai a dor daquela mãe.

Os ais que vêm do sexo,
os ais do prazer na cama.
Os ais da pobre senhora
agarrada ao travesseiro
ai que saudades, saudades,
os ais tão cheios de luto
da viúva inconsolável.
Ai pobre daquele velhinho:
-ai que saudades menina,
-ai a velhice é tão triste.

Os ais do rico e do pobre
ai o espinho da rosa
os ais do António Nobre.
Ais do peito e da poesia
e os ais de outras coisas mais.
Ai a dor que tenho aqui,
ai o gajo também é,
ai a vida que tu levas,
ai tu não faças asneiras,
ai mulher és o demónio,
ai que terrível tragédia,
ai a culpa é do António!

Ai os ais de tanta gente…
ai que já é dia oito
ai o que vai ser de nós.

E os ais dos liriquistas
a chorar compreensão?
Ai que vontade de rir.

E os ais de D. Dinis
Ai Deus e u é…

Triste de quem der um ai
sem achar eco em ninguém.
Os ais da vida e da morte
Ai os ais deste país…

FAUST. A TRAGEDY

PRELUDE ON THE STAGE
[DIRECTOR, POET, CLOWN]
(...)

POET
Then give me back the time when I was young,
When all my life before me lay,
A constant stream of words and song
Burst from my lips with every passing day,

When clouds of glory hid the world from view,

And budding youth still found it all so new;

When flowers in thousands seemed to fill

The fields for me to gather then at will.

Though I had nothing, what I had was this:

The urge for truth, delight in make-believe.

The keenest pangs of adolescent bliss,

Extremes of love and hate, of joy and pain --

Give me back my youth again!

CLOWN
Such youthful energy, my friend, you'll find

Is needed in the frantic heat of war,

Or when some pretty girl might feel inclined

To take you in her arms and ask for more;

Or in the race before your weary eyes

You see the finish and the winner's prize,

Or when the whirling dance is at an end

You spend the night carousing with a friend.

But if you've confidence enough to play

A graceful tune and let us hear your voice,

Or let your pleasant fancy stray

Towards a destination of your choice --

That is a task for the maturer man,

And we respect you for it all the more.

They say age makes us childish -- but it can

Make truer children of us than before.

DIRECTOR
You've bandied words enough, now let me see

Some action from you both for once.

We could have spent the time more usefully

While you two were exchanging compliments.

What's all this talk of inspiration in the end?

You can't just sit and hope it might descent.

If you're a poet, as you claim to be,

Get on with it and write some poetry.

You know exactly what we have to do --

So hurry up and make a decent brew.

Don't leave it till tomorrow, stick at it --

Today will pass you by before you know.

You've got to grab your chance, or else it's gone,

It doesn't come round twice, so don't be slow,

And once you've taken it, don't let it go;

That's the only way to get things done.
