Espantos #522

A Moda do meu Chapéu

Se passares à minha aldeia
Não vás de cabeça ao léu
Quando o sol mais almareia
Podes pôr o meu chapéu.

Podes pôr o meu chapéu
A mais valiosa herança
Já foi de quem está no céu
E não me sai da lembrança.

Quando nos faltar a voz
Há-de haver uma mão cheia
A cantar por todos nós
Tenho cá na minha ideia

Tenho cá na minha ideia
Que o cante se ouve no céu
Se passares à minha aldeia
Não vás de cabeça ao léu.

All those ships that never sailed
by Bob Kaufman

All those ships that never sailed
The ones with their seacocks open
That were scuttled in their stalls...
Today I bring them back
Huge and transitory
And let them sail
Forever.

Great fado singers sound as if they carry the weight of the world's sadness. They don't just wear their hearts on their sleeves — they bare their souls. (...)

This is the start of a short article on fado apropos NPR's Tiny Desk Concert by Camané in 2015. Always fascinating to see how people who don't speak or understand Portuguese find fado appealing. Camané carefully chose three songs to get the message across. The first two (0m00s and 4m47s) somber with the guitar doubling down on the sad voice, the last (9m18s) with a seemingly more uplifting melody, almost danceable, though the lyrics are anything but.

Saudades trago comigo
Do teu corpo e nada mais
Saudades trago comigo
Do teu corpo e nada mais
Pois a lei por que me sigo
Não tem pecados mortais

Talvez tu queiras saber
Porque em vida já estou morto
Talvez tu queiras saber
Porque em vida já estou morto
São apenas, podes crer,
As saudades do teu corpo

E tu que sentes por mim
Desde essa noite perdida
E tu que sentes por mim
Desde essa noite perdida
Sentes esse frio em ti
Que eu sinto na minha vida

Eu sei que o teu corpo
Há-de sentir a falta do meu
Por isso eu tenho a saudade
Que o meu corpo tem do teu
Por isso eu tenho a saudade
Que o meu corpo tem do teu

Eu tenho um sonho doirado
Sonho que a minh'alma quer
Eu tenho um sonho doirado
Sonho que a minh'alma quer
É morrer cantando o fado
Nos braços de uma mulher

A Correr
Camané

Corre a gente decidida
P'ra ter a vida que quer
Sem repararmos que a vida
Passa por nós a correr
Às vezes até esquecemos
Nessa louca correria
Porque motivo corremos
E p'ra onde se corria

Buscando novos sabores
Corre-se atrás de petiscos
Quem corre atrás de valores
Corre sempre grandes riscos
E dá p'ra ser escorraçado
Correr de forma diferente
Há quem seja acorrentado
Por correr contra a corrente

Num constante corropio
Já nem sequer nos ocorre
Que a correr até o rio
Chegando ao mar também morre
Vou atrás do prejuízo
Vou à frente da ameaça
Morremos sem ser preciso
E a correr, a vida passa

Percorrendo o seu caminho
Correndo atrás do sentido
há quem dance o corridinho
Eu canto o fado corrido
E o que me ocorre agora
P'ra não correr qualquer perigo
É correr daqui p'ra fora
Antes que corram comigo
Vou correr daqui p'ra fora
Antes que corram comigo

Tuesdays and Thursdays is crêpe day at the Café library. A nice French lady with a thick accent makes the crêpes right in front of you and for brief moments you don't feel you're in the (English) Midlands anymore. I ordered a mixed fruit sweet crêpe, with banana, nutella, cream and red fruits. After confirming my order, she spread the crêpe batter on the hot round surface, letting the little bubbles pop up before she added the nutella on top. She then folded the crêpe, put it in a paper plate and added the fruit swiftly cutting the banana and the strawberries on top, and putting the cream on the side. As she is about to hand me the plate she asks one last question in her unmistakable accent "More nutellaaah?" to which I reply "Yes... I wonder if anyone says no to that question!" As she spreads the nutella on top she hands me the plate and goes "Hahahaha... have a good day!"

marinhos
a lindíssima garça AZUL!

Victoria and Abdul (2017) is based on the true story of the late years of Queen Victoria and an Indian servant, which upset the natural order of the court and irked many in the royal household and circle.

Beyond concerns of historical accuracy, for me the movie is about the loneliness of old age and the appearance of a loyal and kind soul that pays attention, tells stories of far away places and cultures, rekindling the interest in life that so often is gone in old people. Truman Capote once said:

Life is a moderately good play with a badly written third act.

Despite having everything she wanted, queen Victoria's third act was unhappy until Abdul Karim showed up to brighten her last days. Had he not been an Indian perhaps there would have been no scandal. Probably he would have conformed to the rules and would have never befriended the queen. But Victoria's last act was to be rewritten... lucky her!

About Elie Wiesel's book Night published in 1958, here's this year's entry on the Writer's Almanac a couple of days ago on Weisel's birthday:

Wiesel wrote the first version of Night in Yiddish under the title “And the World Stayed Silent” while working as a journalist in Brazil. Later he met the French writer François Mauriac, who convinced him to write a shorter version of the book in French. A lot of publishers rejected Night at first; the only really successful book about the Holocaust that had come out so far was The Diary of Anne Frank, which didn’t show the horror of the camps. (Wiesel once said, “Where Anne Frank’s book ends, mine begins.”) Scribner’s rejected the book because they thought it was too much of a historical account and not enough of a work of art.

Night
was published in 1958 but, despite good reviews, had bad sales until 20 years later. It was one of the first books to raise the question of the goodness of a God who could allow the Holocaust. (Wiesel lost his Jewish faith during his time in the camps.)

Night
broke the silence around the Holocaust and made it easier for other survivors to tell their stories.
Wiesel’s writing comes off as stark and artistically modest; he avoids editorializing or using the Holocaust to express some other idea. Wiesel has repeatedly used the word “witness” to describe himself, and he views his work in a much more limited way than most artists. In an introduction to a new translation of
Night, he wrote: “I must confess that I do not know, or no longer know, what I wanted to achieve with my words. I only know that without this testimony, my life as a writer — or my life, period — would not have become what it is: that of a witness who believes he has a moral obligation to try to prevent the enemy from enjoying one last victory by allowing his crimes to be erased from human memory.”

Wiesel preferred teaching to writing, and taught in the philosophy and religion departments at Boston University. He was also the chairman of the council that created the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., and he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. Wiesel died in 2016 at the age of 87 and is remembered for his urgent call to pay attention to victims of oppression. He wrote: “The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference. The opposite of beauty is not ugliness, it’s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, but indifference between life and death.”

September 30th largely marks the end of beach season in Portugal (though the end date may be earlier or later according to the region). Around here it's already very much fall... lest any doubt still subsisted :-)
