Truth is ever to be found in simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.

Things Shouldn’t Be So Hard
by Kay Ryan
A life should leave
deep tracks:
ruts where she
went out and back
to get the mail
or move the hose
around the yard;
where she used to
stand before the sink,
a worn-out place;
beneath her hand
the china knobs
rubbed down to
white pastilles;
the switch she
used to feel for
in the dark
almost erased.
Her things should
keep her marks.
The passage
of a life should show;
it should abrade.
And when life stops,
a certain space—
however small—
should be left scarred
by the grand and
damaging parade.
Things shouldn’t
be so hard.

Naquele bairro fadista
calaram-se as guitarradas:
não se canta nesse dia,
velha tradição bairrista,
vibram no ar badaladas,
há festa na Mouraria.
Colchas ricas nas janelas,
pétalas soltas no chão.
Almas crentes, povo rude
anda a fé pelas vielas:
é dia da procissão
da senhora da saúde.
Após um curto rumor
profundo siléncio pesa:
por sobre o largo da guia
passa a Virgem no andor.

Red Never Lasts*
by Anya Krugovoy Silver
There’s no doubt it’s the most glamorous,
the one you reach for first—its luscious gloss.
Russian Roulette, First Dance, Apéritif, Cherry Pop.
For three days, your nails are a Ferris wheel,
a field of roses, a flashing neon Open sign.
Whatever you’re wearing feels like a tight dress
and your hair tousles like Marilyn’s on the beach.
But soon, after dishwashing, typing, mopping,
the chips begin, first at the very tips and edges
where you hardly notice, then whole shards.
Eventually, the fuss is too much to maintain.
Time to settle in to the neutral tones.
Baby’s Breath, Curtain Call, Bone.

Still on the space probe Cassini that sends NASA fantastic pictures of Saturn and its rings. Here's Pan, one of the many moons of Saturn with 25 by 32 km that orbits in Encke's gap about 325 km wide, on the A ring. Since it's a shepherd moon, Pan's orbit repels nearby particles, creating the said gap. Discovered in 1990, Pan's existence was predicted by scientists five years earlier, who suspected the wavy edges of the gap were caused by some disturbing gravitation force within it. Space probe Voyager 2 (lounched in 1977) proved the existence of Pan back in 1990, but only two months ago did Cassini show its ravioli shape!

com um telescópio original em funcionamento desde 1904;
no entanto, as únicas estrelas que vimos ontem
estavam no tecto do salão nobre

The Necessary Brevity of Pleasures
by Samuel Hazo
Prolonged, they slacken into pain
or sadness in accordance with the law
of apples.
One apple satisfies.
Two apples cloy.
Three apples
glut.
Call it a tug-of-war between enough and more
than enough, between sufficiency
and greed, between the stay-at-homers
and globe-trotting see-the-worlders.
Like lovers seeking heaven in excess,
the hopelessly insatiable forget
how passion sharpens appetites
that gross indulgence numbs.
Result?
The haves have not
what all the have-nots have
since much of having is the need
to have.
Even my dog
knows that—and more than that.
He slumbers in a moon of sunlight,
scratches his twitches and itches
in measure, savors every bite
of grub with equal gratitude
and stays determinedly in place
unless what’s suddenly exciting
happens.
Viewing mere change
as threatening, he relishes a few
undoubtable and proven pleasures
to enjoy each day in sequence
and with canine moderation.
They’re there for him in waiting,
and he never wears them out.

The grand finale of Cassini's unmanned spacecraft mission started yesterday, in a joint project of NASA and ESA for the study of Saturn. Launched on October 5 1997, Cassini's initial voyage lasted 6 years and 261 days until it entered Saturn's orbit (flying by Venus, Jupiter and several moons in the meantime), where the actual mission had an estimated duration of four years.
Two extensions of the original mission ensured it's still orbiting today, but the project is coming to a close soon. This last stage consists of repeated (weekly) passages of the spacecraft between Saturn and its rings, until the September solstice when it should dive into Saturn's atmosphere, losing contact with Earth within one minute. Until then, Cassini will continue to collect images and data, never before explored. Everything in Cassini's mission amazes!
