Espantos #340

Sequentially funny and clumsy moments…

(1) My original flight to Vancouver today was through Houston, but for some reason I was convinced it was through Dallas. When I arrived at the check-in counter to print my boarding passes, the United lady asked me where I was going. This is the dialogue that ensued:

Me: Vancouver through Dallas.
Her: Dallas?
Me: yes Dallas.
Her: Dallas or Dulles?
I can't hear the subtle difference, so the question sounded rather silly, but I went on
Me: Dallas.
As I was thinking of imitating the southern accent and say Dehllas, she asked
Her: Dallas in Texas, or Dulles in Washington DC?
I was about to say Texas, but looked at the ticket to make sure, and then…
Me: ooooh, it's Houston actually. :-D

(2) My flight to Houston was delayed enough that I would miss my connection to Vancouver, so United’s gate agent put me on an American Airlines flight through Dallas, after checking other possible connections (DEN, DTW, IAH, LAX, ORD, MSP, SLC). :-)

(3) Much to my surprise American Airlines planes, unlike United’s, are equipped with wi-fi aboard… for some reason I thought I was going through Dallas! ;-)

Momentos estranhamente divertidos e consecutivos...

Eu: Vancouver via Dallas.
Ela: Dallas?
Eu: Sim, Dallas.

The Siege of Belgrade

An Austrian army, awfully arrayed,
Boldly by battery besieged Belgrade.
Cossack commanders cannonading come,
Dealing destruction's devastating doom.
Every endeavor engineers essay,
For fame, for fortune fighting - furious fray!
Generals 'gainst generals grapple - gracious God!
How honors Heaven heroic hardihood!
Infuriate, indiscrminate in ill,
Kindred kill kinsmen, kinsmen kindred kill.
Labor low levels longest, lofiest lines;
Men march 'mid mounds, 'mid moles, ' mid murderous mines;
Now noxious, noisey numbers nothing, naught
Of outward obstacles, opposing ought;
Poor patriots, partly purchased, partly pressed,
Quite quaking, quickly "Quarter! Quarter!" quest.
Reason returns, religious right redounds,
Suwarrow stops such sanguinary sounds.
Truce to thee, Turkey! Triumph to thy train,
Unwise, unjust, unmerciful Ukraine!
Vanish vain victory! vanish, victory vain!
Why wish we warfare? Wherefore welcome were
Xerxes, Ximenes, Xanthus, Xavier?
Yield, yield, ye youths! ye yeomen, yield your yell!
Zeus', Zarpater's, Zoroaster's zeal,
Attracting all, arms against acts appeal!

Arbitrage (2012). The movie starts showing a very rich man's perfect life which, little by little, we start realizing is not so perfect after all. Above a certain level of wealth, the line between right and wrong just gets blurred and every decision is about damage control... no matter who you're stepping on.

Moon River
Andy Williams

Moon river, wider than a mile
I'm crossing you in style some day
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you're going, I'm going your way

Two drifters, off to see the world
There's such a lot of world to see
We're after the same rainbow's end, waiting, round the bend
My Huckleberry Friend, Moon River, and me

Moon river, wider than a mile
I'm crossing you in style some day
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker
Wherever you're going, I'm going your way

Two drifters, off to see the world
There's such a lot of world to see
We're after that same rainbow's end, waiting, round the bend
My Huckleberry Friend, Moon River, and me

Bargaining in the Club can sometimes take on an amusing note. Just recently, one overheard two people "handeling" about a two-carat* stone which went as follows:

"Do you have a two-carat stone for $1,200 per carat?"
The man replied "definitely not."
"$1,300?" - No.
"$1,400?" - No.
"$1,500?" - Shrug of the head.
"$1,600?" - Oh yes I have just the stone for you.
The alleged buyer looked at the stone and said:
"Fine, will you take $1,200 per carat for it?"
